Tom Sachs

A Space Program
Creative Dir
Tom Sachs (b.1966, New York) is a sculptor, installation artist, and painter known for his innovative renaming, examination, and questioning of icons of capitalist culture and systems of daily life. He deals with themes such as reflection on the haves and have-nots, utopian follies, dystopian realities, profligate consumption and even more profligate waste as he expands his scope of creativity from crude yet ingenious perversions of weaponry and luxury accoutrements. His sculptures show all of the work that goes into production—a reversal of modernization’s trend of opaque, clean and more perfect edges, Sachs’s sculptures are conspicuously handmade; lovingly cobbled together from plywood, cardboard, resin, steel and ceramic. The scars and imperfections in the sculpture tell the story of how it came into being and are removed from the realm of miraculous conception. His studio team of ten, functions like a teaching hospital or cult, that worships plywood and an ethos of transparency. Keeping it all visually and conceptually unified, is a strict code of ethics that Sachs has developed regarding creativity, caprice, play and discipline as detailed in the short film Ten Bullets. His film collaborations with Van Neistat (since 2001) have served to represent the aspects of the sculptures that exist in time. View them all at www.tenbullets.com
