John has over 30 years’ experience in the life science sector. He holds a BS and MS in Microbiology; and a PhD in Virology & Epidemiology from Baylor College of Medicine. He was a post-doctoral fellow at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in La Jolla, then a Research Virologist at the Center for Molecular Biology in Medicine, a joint Stanford Medical School- Palo Alto VA research center. John also has a law degree and has worked as a patent and corporate attorney for over 17 years with life science companies. He was General Counsel at Advanced Tissue Sciences in La Jolla for several years, then worked at Applied Biosystems, which became Life Technologies, for over ten years. John moved to Austin in 2006 when Applied Biosystems acquired Ambion. John is currently the President of BioAustin, the life science industry organization for central Texas. BioAustin is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization whose mission is to help the central Texas life science sector grow and prosper. About 75 local life science companies are currently members of BioAustin. John has given numerous scientific and professional talks and presentations, over the years at local, regional, national and international meetings. He has over 25 scientific publications and several legal publications.
