Dickens Olewe
The Star Kenya
Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford University
Dickens Olewe is a journalism pioneer. His drone journalism project, AfricanSkyCAM, was a winner in the inaugural African News Challenge. But this is not the first time he’s launched innovative approaches to journalism. At the Star newspaper, he led a project on collaborative journalism that involved citizens contributing stories through a mobile app. He also lead the creation of a health data portal to kickstart data journalism in the newsroom. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in communication from Daystar University, Olewe began submitting letters and articles, usually on current affairs, to the major newspapers in Kenya and amassed a portfolio that he used to get a column at the Star newspaper. The newspaper offered him on-the-job training as a webmaster to help set up its website and he created the Star’s digital strategy. He advises Hivisasa, a mobile news startup in Kenya.
