Beyond Genre: How To Better Connect Fans w/ Music
In the very near future, genre will no longer be the primary way of classifying music. Not only are both fans and artists chaffing against the limitations of an archaic system designed for physical stores with limited shelf space, music services are competing with each other to find new ways to intelligently deliver the right music at the right time in ways simple genre classifications can’t provide. The Jones Family Will Make a Way
For 30 years, Bishop Fred Jones and his family have performed on the southern gospel circuit, largely unseen by those outside the Pentecostal faith. When the Bishop, despite objections from many within his faith, decided to take his family’s musical ministry outside the church, he unexpectedly connected with the oddest of allies – a jaded, atheistic rock critic, who also happened to be a gospel historian. To Michael Corcoran, the Jones Family Singers represent a living link to a style of gospel he thought had disappeared. These most unlikely of friends bonded through perhaps their one shared trait -- a deeply rooted rebelliousness.

Hip Hop's Evolution in India - Why You Should Care
In the 70's and 80's HipHop served as a platform for the minority to express themselves about social & political injustice and other issues. Over the last few years, we've almost seen the HipHop culture slowing down (or maybe evolving) in North America. But all the while, HipHop has been growing like wildfire all over India. HipHop is a platform of expression and there are over 200M youth with increasing purchasing power ready to express themselves about social & political issues... which will in turn expand the current $80B market.

Over the past year, we’ve seen many artists release their album in unique ways and frame their projects through non-traditional approaches. The same level of thoughtfulness and authenticity in the artist's creative process has now extended to their presence on social media.

Wearables Schmerables: What it Means for Music
The wearable device trend has many implications for music - beyond health monitors, there are 3G and 4g connected headphones, motion controlled, connected wristbands, sports training devices with programmed music.
Will these devices spur new ways of consuming music? The form factors will drive some of the behavior: many are single use devices for a specific purpose, and they are often minimalistic and small - so have little to no control mechanism or search capabilities.
With limited to no storage in wearable devices, are niche streaming and highly curated channels more likely than accessing your entire collection?
Learn from experts how music will evolve with the wearable device evolution.

'Upward and Onward': Ian 'Mac' McLagan Remembered

Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame keyboardist Ian ‘Mac’ McLagan was fond of saying, with gusto, "You know what I like? Everything!" He brought that joie de vivre spirit to his bands The Small Faces and Faces - and it was the same exultant attitude be brought to all of the musicians he played with, as well as to the community of friends he amassed in his adopted hometown of twenty years, Austin, Texas. Mac made no distinction between the rock stars he played with and the friends he made daily. To know Mac was to love him. And the best thing was you knew he loved you back.

Mac - who passed away suddenly at home last December at the age of 69 - will be remembered at this panel by his pals and co-horts, who will share anecdotes of his riotous romp through rock and roll history.

Along with his work with two of rock's all-time greatest bands, Mac's playing with the likes of The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt, Billy Bragg, Lucinda Williams and countless others helped make the soundtrack to several generations' lives. But if he was here he'd just as soon have a Guinness and tell a joke as talk about all that rock and roll stuff (it's all in his book "All The Rage" anyway).

How Visuals & Tech are Changing the Live Electronic Music Experience
"Visuals dictate the music I play“ - Anonymously stated by one of the biggest stars in EDM, this statement encapsulates the current state of electronic live performance. In the US, electronic music festivals are at an all-time high with just shy of 1m tickets sold to EDM-only festivals in 2014. The performance of electronic music is no longer just about a DJ mixing two tracks. It’s about a shared experience, the combined consumption of realtime audio and video - giant screens, giant drops, a giant miracle touching all senses. Music tech companies, festival organizers and artists discuss what comes first in the conception of live shows, music or visuals, and in which direction things are heading in the future.

Jim Marshall: All Access Photo Pass
Jim Marshall (1936-2010) is world-renowned as the pioneer of rock-and-roll photography. His unlimited access to musicians allowed him to capture some of the most iconic images in music history. Photographers today do not have the same, unlimited access as Marshall did. We'll discuss the lasting impact and influence of Marshall's work on the business of music photography in the present day. Life Beyond Music: Making Change
Lost set lists... record deals... that one time you broke down in Reno, and ended up singing “Freebird” at the local bar..

At the core, it's about making change: emotionally, geographically, or socially. Figuring out which route to take can be difficult; time is a finite resource. How does anyone do it all?
These panelists are here to discuss the unique experiences they've had in their careers, and the lessons they were taught... and further, how those lessons helped them create change in their global community.

Reissuing Records: (Re)introducing Lost Classics
Since the dawn of the recorded music era, millions of recordings have been created. A very small percentage of these recordings have become embedded in our culture, almost all of which are owned by major media corporations. Pre-internet, there were thousands of entrepreneurs recording and releasing records, then selling to fans in their own regional areas. Some great, inspired recordings were pressed once and forgotten. Labels are now finding ways to step into the shoes of the original entrepreneurs by obtaining rights and re-issuing amazing recordings by relatively unknown artists. Reissues have also inspired unknown/unheard live recordings and new records by classic artists.

Valuation of Data In Music Transactions
Fan and customer data has emerged as a new category of value associated with music artists. Our engagement with music is captured as never before to produce actionable information, which has value not only for marketing artistic products but also verifying audience attributes to prospective advertisers and sponsors. Valuation of this data has become a key point of negotiation in music transactions or dispute resolutions, such as acquisitions, financing transactions, or leaving member situations. Understanding how this data is collected, who owns the data, and how such data can be used to extract the greatest value for an artist or a rights holder is critical to long-term financial success.

THE DAMNED: Don't You Wish That We Were Dead
From Lemmy filmmaker Wes Orshoski comes the story of the long-ignored pioneers of punk: The Damned, the first U.K. punks on wax and the first to cross the Atlantic. This authorized film includes appearances from Chrissie Hynde, Mick Jones (The Clash), Lemmy and members of Pink Floyd, Black Flag, GNR, the Sex Pistols, Blondie, Buzzcocks, and more. Shot around the globe over three years, the film charts the band's complex history and infighting, as it celebrated its 35th anniversary and found its estranged former members striking out on their own anniversary tour, while still others battle cancer.

Be Hear Now: Hearing Protection Is Music's Future
Noise induced hearing loss is poised to become the next major public health crisis, having a profound impact not just on professionals at every level of the music business but on all music fans who support them with dedication and dollars. Yet this devastating disability is completely preventable by limiting exposure and using protection. But whose responsibility is it to educate and encourage friends, fans and co-workers to practice safe sound?

Exposure vs. Revenue on YouTube: Must We Choose?
YouTube is the largest streaming platform in the world with a massive breadth of content, a large portion of which is devoted to music. It also boasts the second most powerful search engine after Google, making it ideal for music discovery. Producer or Songwriter?
Recording budgets are shrinking. Making money on back-end royalties is less and less common. How does a record producer keep his/her doors open for business while the traditional revenue streams are drying up? The answer lies in a shift toward publishing participation and producers are starting to demand songwriting participation in return for their services. Has this type of compensation always been due to the producer? Did producers let it slide for years, foregoing publishing participation in return for large producer fees? Or is this yet another party now inserting themselves in the only game still generating income...publishing?

Danny Says
Danny Says is a documentary on the life and times of Danny Fields. Since 1966, Danny Fields has played a pivotal role in rock 'n' roll of the late 20th century, working for the Doors, Lou Reed, Nico, Judy Collins; managing groundbreaking artists like the Stooges, MC5, and the Ramones; and hanging out in Andy Warhol's Silver Factory. Danny Says follows Danny from Phi Beta Kappa whiz-kid, to Harvard Law dropout, to Warhol confidant, to Director of Publicity at Elektra Records, to punk pioneer and beyond. Danny’s taste and opinion, once deemed defiant and radical, has turned out to have been prescient. Danny Says is a story of marginal turning mainstream, avant garde turning prophetic.

With more music festivals than ever before, producers are differentiating themselves by paying more attention to the overall attendee and artist experience. Music in Sports featuring Wiz Khalifa
Some sports have specific traditions with respect to pieces of music played at particular intervals. Others have made the presentation of music very specific to the team—even to particular players. It's used to build the energy of the fans, and is also used in ways that are less directly connected with the action in a sporting event.

Viva Album Art!
Pre-digital music fans recall sitting on their bedroom floors and sifting through liner notes, immersing themselves in new albums.
While music consumption has advanced so much, the concept of album artwork has been left behind. We explore music through excel sheet-type players with little square album covers.
Yet, the artwork still matters to artists. Several have released "visual albums" in attempt to revive those rich experiences.
We'll discuss how musicians can use digital media to express their stories, and invite their fans to emotionally connect with their music, using the best platforms and practices that the digital world has to offer.

Y/OUR MUSIC
Y/OUR MUSIC immerses itself in the world of Thai music, from traditional music to labor songs and classical pop to urban indie music, spanning different locales and generations. As nine musicians each display their music, the rural or urban environments that influenced their sound are explored. The hands that play traditional instruments amid the red dust clouds, the labor songs being hummed in front of grains awaiting harvest, and the indie music born out of concrete basements create a melodious ecosystem. While they inhabit different musical worlds the musicians are connected by the same passion to bring their artistic aspirations to the fore and survive in the outskirts of the mainstream.

Made in Japan
Made in Japan is the remarkable story of Tomi Fujiyama, the first female Japanese country music star. From playing the USO circuit throughout Asia to headlining in Las Vegas and recording 7 albums for Columbia records, Tomi’s career culminates in a 1964 performance at The Grand Ole Opry where she followed Johnny Cash and received the only standing ovation of the night. Forty years later, Tomi and her husband set out on a journey through Japan and across the United States to fulfill a dream of performing at The Opry one more time. Made in Japan is a funny yet poignant multi-cultural journey through music, marriage, and the impact of the corporate world on the dreams of one woman.

We Like It Like That
Latin boogaloo is New York City. It is a product of the melting pot, a colorful expression of 1960s Latino soul, straight from the streets of El Barrio, the South Bronx and Brooklyn.
Starring Latin boogaloo legends like Joe Bataan, Johnny Colon and Pete Rodriguez, We Like It Like That explores this lesser-known, but pivotal moment in Latin music history, through original interviews, music recordings, live performances, dancing and rare archival footage and images.
From its origins to its recent resurgence in popularity, We Like It Like That tells the story of a sound that redefined a generation and was too funky to keep down.

How Sampling Saved Music
Sampling has long been demonized by many within the music industry. Critics of sampling feel that it lacks creativity and musicianship and is even on par with “stealing” another musician’s work. On the other side of the argument are multi-platinum artists that swear by the use of sampling as a way to create and innovate musical fusions that aide discovery and awareness of legacy catalogues to new audiences. In this session, we will discuss how sampling saved the music industry by growing the music revenues for everyone, revitalizing the neighborhood vinyl shop, and giving rise to the highly-profitable dance festivals.

Give It Away Now: The “Value” In Free Music
Free music is everywhere. Music fans listen to Pandora and Spotify all day at no cost to them. Publishers grant gratis synch licenses to low budget productions for promotional value. Across the industry, artists, songwriters and those who represent them are bombarded with "opportunities" to give their intellectual property away, and many do for various reasons. Granting access to music for free or at rock bottom fees has become standard in the industry; whereas the significant implications of doing so remain largely unexamined. We’ll take a look at how giving music away can change the course of your career or business and how to use the practice to your advantage.

How to Fill a Club When You Play Sheboygan
Publicists, artists and artist management are often frustrated in their efforts to generate good attendance at shows away from home. There are fewer local print publications, especially in smaller markets, and those that exist often provide little or no music coverage. At the same time, new types of media have now established themselves and traditional alternative outlets now are more responsive to independent publicists and artists than ever before. Even so, getting the word out and filling a club in tertiary markets is a challenge.
We will discuss how to locate the pertinent media in tour markets large and small and how to communicate with them most effectively.

The Celebrity Economy in Music feat Paul Krugman, Win & Will Butler, & More
How will artists make money in ten years? Twenty-five years? In a forward-looking predictive piece in 1996, The New York Times columnist Paul Krugman wrote about “the celebrity economy,” in which “creations must make money indirectly by promoting sales of something else.” Today, artists are increasingly turning to sponsorships and ad placement for funding, and with a new generation rising to fame on YouTube and Vine rather than through record labels, traditional revenue streams will only become less valuable. Hear how industry professionals are navigating this changing landscape, what they predict lies ahead, and what they believe will be discussed at SXSW 2040.
Presented in partnership with All Things Go.

The Devil You Don't Know: Artists & Direct Deals
Major labels and publishers tout the benefits of “direct deals” and “free market rates.” But are they telling artists the whole story? While it’s possible that direct deals might lead to higher rates, it’s just as likely that the opposite will occur, as rightsholders rush to undercut one another. Artists would cede leverage to just a handful of powerful industry players, with no guarantee bigger paydays. At a time where we desperately need more transparency, are direct deals a step in the opposite direction? We'll examine the issues at play in Washington DC, and in the marketplace and what they might mean for the most important players in the space: music creators.

The State of the Vintage Guitar Market
The vintage and used guitar market is in a unique place. Prices on iconic instruments soared prior to the recession and have been in steady decline since. Modern manufactures have not stopped producing new instruments, and since used guitars do not typically depreciate in quality, there are arguably more guitars on the market now than demand dictates. Simultaneously, the decades-long decline of the rock band as a standard of popular music means younger generations lack the reverence for guitars felt by their parents. We'll explore the current market, where it's headed, and how musicians can take advantage of the situation to land fantastic vintage gear for themselves.

Redefining 'Radio' for the Digital Age
This panel will discuss the implications of the increasingly blurred lines between different radio platforms: Broadcast (AM/FM), satellite and Internet. No longer can radio be defined solely as "the wireless transmission of signals through free space by electromagnetic waves of frequency." How are new services in the car, mobile devices, set top boxes and even wearables changing the nature of radio? How will radio listeners experience music in 5 years? What is radio in the digital age? Is it time for a "new" definition of radio?

The (Real) Market Value of a Music Placement
In today’s ever-fluctuating music biz paradigm, one of the few things rarely disputed is the "value" of a film, TV, video game or advertising placement. We all know the tale of the band that went from unknown to household name based on the strength of an iTunes commercial or a prominent use on a hit show. But, how does that translate to the average artist and do all placements stack up? Using real-world case studies, this panel will discuss the unique alchemy that often has to exist to make a single music supervision moment truly hit and translate into quantitative career results, as well as the variety of factors to consider when determining the potential worth of a music use.

Why You Matter to Brands/Why Brands Matter to You
Is a record deal still the end game for artists? Does landing “the deal” signify an artist has made it? With so many platforms to share their music with the world, are brand deals as aspirational as label deals for independent artists? Marketers are just beginning to understand the value of music for driving business. Beyond a soundtrack to an ad, the strategic use of music extends the reach of a campaign, and deepens consumer engagement. For an artist, the exposure gained by having their music score a campaign, across geographies and media channels can be the break they need to propel their careers to the next level. Join us to discuss the value of a brand deal from both perspectives.

Gear Up, Lean Back: Linear Radio Becomes Dynamic
This is the pivotal moment for linear radio and streaming music services to come together. Consumers currently have the option to use a completely lean back experience found in traditional radio, a semi-lean-back algorithmically curated experience, or the fully lean-forward, highly active search and discovery of on-demand products. Most services either focus on one of these or offer a mixture of models often sitting uncomfortably next to each other. With so much talk about ‘radio style services’ entering the market, what experience sets the standard? This panel will facilitate a sophisticated discussion of how and what to blend from linear radio and new digital music services.
