Equality for Women in Dance Music
One of the most frequently asked questions to women in the Dance Music arena has to be: "Why do you think there are so few women in the dance community?" Is sexism encouraged in the industry or is Dance Music really welcoming women in with open arms and on an even playing field? We’ll address some common hurtles and strategize how to get past them with a poised and fearless "idgaf" attitude.

How Sampling Saved Music
Sampling has long been demonized by many within the music industry. Critics of sampling feel that it lacks creativity and musicianship and is even on par with “stealing” another musician’s work. On the other side of the argument are multi-platinum artists that swear by the use of sampling as a way to create and innovate musical fusions that aide discovery and awareness of legacy catalogues to new audiences. In this session, we will discuss how sampling saved the music industry by growing the music revenues for everyone, revitalizing the neighborhood vinyl shop, and giving rise to the highly-profitable dance festivals.

Rhymesayers, the home of Atmosphere, MF Doom, Brother Ali, Aesop Rock, Dilated Peoples, Freeway & Jake One & more is celebrating their 20th Year Anniversary in 2015. In honor of that the Rhymesayers staff and artists will discuss the path of turning a passion into a successful business model. Alt, Pop and Rock Go to Broadway
The worlds of rock/pop/alternative music and the Broadway stage have had a good relationship over the years (The Who's Tommy, Elton John's The Lion King and Billy Elliot) but now with the success of Glen Hansard's Once, Cyndi Lauper's Kinky Boots and Duncan Sheik's Spring Awakening more songwriters now yearn to tell stories outside the 3 1/2 minute box and Broadway can be their outlet. The musical score is now left to stand on it's own merits rather than being "changed" for the Broadway audience and this has a whole new breed of fan flocking to the theatre to hear music from their favorite pop/rock/alt artists.

Join us as we discuss an evolving art form and the community committed to its future.

Uncovering Gender Politics in Rap Business
Achieving success as a woman in the male-dominated arena of hip-hop can be an uphill battle. Judged on appearances more than skill, female artists are often relegated to eye candy instead of the main attraction. But not every dismissed mic mistress meets the same fate. Nicki Minaj, Iggy Azalea, and Azealia Banks are just a few of the lucky ones who are granted access to the winner’s circle. But are these women really what the game’s been missing or just corporate-sponsored stereotypes reincarnated?
