The Devil You Don't Know: Artists & Direct Deals
Major labels and publishers tout the benefits of “direct deals” and “free market rates.” But are they telling artists the whole story? While it’s possible that direct deals might lead to higher rates, it’s just as likely that the opposite will occur, as rightsholders rush to undercut one another. Artists would cede leverage to just a handful of powerful industry players, with no guarantee bigger paydays. At a time where we desperately need more transparency, are direct deals a step in the opposite direction? We'll examine the issues at play in Washington DC, and in the marketplace and what they might mean for the most important players in the space: music creators.

Redefining 'Radio' for the Digital Age
This panel will discuss the implications of the increasingly blurred lines between different radio platforms: Broadcast (AM/FM), satellite and Internet. No longer can radio be defined solely as "the wireless transmission of signals through free space by electromagnetic waves of frequency." How are new services in the car, mobile devices, set top boxes and even wearables changing the nature of radio? How will radio listeners experience music in 5 years? What is radio in the digital age? Is it time for a "new" definition of radio?

Gear Up, Lean Back: Linear Radio Becomes Dynamic
This is the pivotal moment for linear radio and streaming music services to come together. Consumers currently have the option to use a completely lean back experience found in traditional radio, a semi-lean-back algorithmically curated experience, or the fully lean-forward, highly active search and discovery of on-demand products. Most services either focus on one of these or offer a mixture of models often sitting uncomfortably next to each other. With so much talk about ‘radio style services’ entering the market, what experience sets the standard? This panel will facilitate a sophisticated discussion of how and what to blend from linear radio and new digital music services.

Access to Affinity: The Future of Digital Music
For the last decade, digital music services have existed primarily to provide access to music—be it downloads, Internet radio, or on-demand streaming. The successful digital music services of the next decade, however, will be defined by how well they connect fans with the music and artists they love. Access to music is just a part of that equation. Fans are looking to establish an identity with their favorite music and artists. To provide that, digital music services must enable more fan/artists experiences, integration with live events, and more.

What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You - Music Licensing
In the old economy pricing was set by labels. In the new access economy, with interactive services such as Spotify and semi-interactive custom radio services such as Pandora, the revenues received are based upon advertising sales and/or subscription revenues. When a digital service earns revenue by either charging a subscription fee or by selling advertising, it ends up with a fixed revenue pie from which it shares revenue with all rights holders. Artists and labels compete for those revenues as well as promotional opportunity access. Join us to learn details of the new music economy, as well as what artists and labels need to know to get their fair share of access and compensation.

We will discuss industry hot topics relating to the migration of content to the hands of new players, as well as large entities that historically were not content creators and the resulting effects it has on the content ecosystem. We will also discuss how independent content creators are building and harnessing the power of their content and brand in ways that could never be possible in the recent past. Discussion will also assess how the variations in pricing of digital goods across different platforms affects content distribution, the benefits (or lack thereof).
