Get Big Things Done with Connectional Intelligence
For the first time in history we’re all in touch with one another digitally, but how connected are we when it comes to getting big things done?
Yes, it’s good to have “friends” who “like” you or contacts that can help you get a new job. However, solving big problems, creating amazing products, changing social policy, and discovering a cure that saves lives are all much more meaningful than sitting at a laptop and giving a thumbs up to a post or feverishly playing a game. That’s what Connectional Intelligence is all about.
Connectional Intelligence is the human capability to pool knowledge and ambition towards big, significant ends. It quickly, efficiently, and creatively helps individuals enlist helpers, analyze information, and find solutions. Learn how to use it and harness it in this reading with leading expert and author, Erica Dhawan.

Synthetic Biology: Learn, Do, and Dream
This panel will explore the advancement of biotechnology education through entry-level technologies, such as Rapid DNA Prototyping (RDP) Kits, #ScienceHacks (sciencehack.synbiota.com), the Synbiota platform (synbiota.com), as well as other citizen science initiatives in synthetic biology. The panelists will explore the implications for security and education as these technologies enter the workplaces and minds of newbie scientists.
Novice-welcoming synbio and biohacker projects that get science enthusiasts “learning by doing” have dramatically transformed the shape of the potential future scientist’s gateway into synthetic biology, and have influenced the direction of regulatory and policy making efforts. At the same time, they have extended and enriched the toolkits of traditional researchers in exciting scientific cases that will be explored.

Since the first urban environments of the Roman Empire, to modern day metropolises, our cities have been filled with physical signage that passively direct, lead, and inform our actions and behavior. Many of these signs communicate to us a universal civic code of etiquette, reminding us not to litter, pick up after your dog, and slow down because a school is near. Noun Project is expanding on this idea with KindSigns, an art project that encourages everyday citizens to create signs that communicate personalized, provocative messages to challenge, inspire and delight those around them.
Join Noun Project in an exciting workshop where you will create your own KindSign with a powerful pictographic messages. Participants will learn the fundamentals of visual communication and semiotics, how to create an icon, and finally will get the chance to help inspire others.
The workshop will kick off with a presentation about the power of visual communication. Then during the next hour, you will play a game designed to help generate ideas for your own KindSign. After this participants will sketch out their ideas. Finally the last 30 mins will be spent on group presentations.
After the event, The Noun Project will transform the sketches into polished icons, and print the designs on signage. The final aluminum signage, containing both message & pictogram, will be mailed to each participant to share in their own built environment.

Today, far more data is being generated than is ever properly analyzed. Making data easier to analyze will benefit everyone, from the corner ice-cream store and budding student to Walmart and the World Bank. Unfortunately, today's tools make data science the province of a small group of experts, limiting the potential impact of all this new data. In this workshop, we will walk you through the basic steps of data science work, and show you how next-generation tools can remove much of the complex drudgery that limit data science to a privileged few. The workshop will be interactive: all participants will start with a browser and end with a multiple data science applications in the cloud. We'll wrap up by discussing the future of data science.
During this workshop you will:
- Get an overview of what data science is
- Get practical experience with data science techniques
- See how the next generation data science tools can unlock powerful, automated data science workflows
This two and a half hour long workshop will go as follows: The first 45 minutes will be an overview and discussion session, followed by a 15 minute break. We will then break into groups for a hands-on session of 1h15. The last 15 minutes will be a wrap-up discussion.

Empowering Cities with Big Data Analytics
The Big Data Revolution has begun, but the applications and implications of harvesting and harnessing this data are in their infancy—and this is particularly true in understanding how cities really ‘work’ and how to make them better. However, the potential impact of Big Data Analytics—using data collected from pervasive sensors and ubiquitous mobile devices—in improving the lives of everyone in cities is enormous: safety, quality and efficiency of services, and even enrichment and entertainment. There are challenges to overcome: collecting enough high-quality data; obtaining buy-in from citizens and protecting their privacy; developing urban models with sufficient accuracy; etc. This panel will review current leading city data efforts, present opportunities and possibilities for urban data analytics, and discuss issues and solutions in using Big Data to improve lives for all. Panelists will include leaders in urban planning, computing, mobile devices, and Big Data analytics.

How to Rock SXSW in 4 Hours
SXSW is an incredible opportunity to take your business or life to the next level. But what's the smart way to do it? And how do you choose from a million options?!
In this session, Tim Ferriss will teach his personal playbook and explain how his first book, The 4-Hour Workweek, hit its tipping point at SXSW in 2007. Before SXSW, it was turned down by 26 publishers. Post-SXSW, it went on to sell millions of copies in 30+ languages and stuck on The New York Times bestseller list for more than 4 years unbroken.
What did Tim do at SXSW that helped "the most surprising self-help hit of the decade" (Men's Journal) happen?
This session will cover that and more, including:
- Biohacks for surviving (and optimizing) the booze marathon and sleep deprivation inherent to SXSW
- Top mistakes 90% of attendees make
- How to pick sessions, parties, etc. and make the most of the madness
- How to interact with A-listers (or not)
- How to set yourself apart, enjoy the ride, and come away smiling
If you want actionable advice and uncommon tactics for getting the most out of SXSW, don’t miss this presentation!

The Secret History of Hypertext
In 1934, a little-known Belgian bibliographer named Paul Otlet described something very much like the Internet, sketching out plans for a network of "electric telescopes" connecting people to a vast collection of documents, images, and audio-visual material. He dubbed the whole thing the Mundaneum, describing it as a "réseau mondial" - a worldwide web.
Why should anyone care about the failed schemes of a long-dead Belgian bibliographer? Otlet's work matters today not just as a kind of historical curio, but because he envisioned a radically different kind of network: one driven not by corporate profit and personal vanity, but by a utopian vision of intellectual progress, social egalitarianism, and even spiritual liberation.
This presentation will delve deep into Otlet's alternative vision of a global network, in search of useful lessons that could reshape our understanding of what the Internet could yet become.

When a Moment Becomes a Movement
What does it take to create effective human rights impact in the world? Do we focus on what is happening locally or turn our attention towards international strategies? We believe it takes both. Amnesty International is a Nobel Peace Prize winning grassroots organization with over 50 years of human rights work. We’ve investigated and exposed abuses, educated and mobilized the public and helped transform societies to create a more just world. Amnesty International USA reported on police brutality in Ferguson, MO, advocated for the release of 234 schoolgirls kidnapped in Nigeria, and mobilized the public to demand the release of a Sudanese woman on death row for refusing to renounce her faith. Steven W. Hawkins, Executive Director and Cammie Croft, Deputy Executive Director will lead a discussion on how technology can be used to leverage local responses to injustice and build an international movement capable of mobilizing millions to achieve human rights victory and policy change.

Why Is My Company More Transparent Than My Family?
Why are we getting so good at creating transparency in the workplace, but still seem to be stumbling around in the dark when it comes to our most important job, our family? At a time when no one person “runs” the family anymore, and everyone is expected to pull their own weight, how can family tech keep up with family living?
In this serious but not-so-serious presentation, we’ll make the argument that as relatively good people, it’s not actually our intention to be less-than honest with our family, nor is it fun to be the only one in the family holding the burden of information. We just need to find ways that actually make sharing information, and therefore sharing life with these people, more satisfying and less frustrating.
We’ll present some of the surprising holes in family transparency we found while researching and building DJED, the family app, and talk about how families are changing faster than the technology that's supposed to be making their lives better.

How to Prepare for The Tidal Wave of Big Data Jobs
According to the CDO Club, in 2014, there were an estimated 1,000 Chief Digital Officers and thousands of Data Scientists at companies worldwide – doubling the numbers since 2013. These new titles are only the beginning in a massive shift to accommodate the influx of big data. CDOs are found most frequently in the U.S., followed by the U.K., Australia and Spain (tied for third), France and Italy (tied for fourth), and then Germany. Much like the changing roles throughout the digital industry, with the introduction of social media platforms (i.e. the role of Social Media Manager isn’t even a decade old), the big data industry is creating new roles for both legacy brands and startups. Data experts will be a scarce, valuable commodity in the next decade and a huge opportunity for people with the right skill sets. In this session, you’ll hear from top industry executives, many of them Chief Digital Officers themselves, about how to navigate the new job landscape in the age of big data.

Social Health Startup Bootcamp: Investing in Health
Investments in digital health startups have grown from almost one billion with 139 deals in 2010 to over almost 3 billion with 578 deals in 2013. As more investors begin to view health tech as a viable opportunity for funding and investment – especially as digital health becomes more mainstream through wearables and organic mobile platforms like Apple's Health Kit, Google Fit and Samsung's Digital Health Initiative -- it should come as no surprise that 2014 turned out to be another record-breaking year, with investments totaling over $4.1B, which is more than 2011-2013 combined. Join us for the 4th consecutive year of the Social Health Startup Bootcamp as we discuss the state of digital health funding in 2014, the factors that drove investments, deals, funding stages, investors, startups, most active markets/categories, and where future opportunities may lie.

How to Turn Rejection Into Opportunities
When trying to find an investor for his technology start up, author Jia Jiang was rejected for what he thought was a done deal. It crushed his spirits and made him realize that he shouldn't take rejection this much to heart.
Jiang decided to go out and get rejected for 100 days, intentionally and in a way that would help him overcome his fear. On day three of this journey, a video of him being rejected was viewed by millions of people, and he found encouragement from strangers for the remaining 97 rejections.
After completing this journey, Jiang discovered how much rejection holds us back in our personal and professional lives. We want to land an investor or get capital for our startup, but we're scared that our idea isn't good enough. We want to sell more products, but we're afraid of hearing "no." All of these obstacles can be beaten with the right strategy, which Jiang has found in facing his own fear of rejection and is now sharing with you.

Artist Meets Hacker: How Tech is Changing the Arts
Artists have always been at the forefront of defining the culture of the day, how we communicate with each other and about ourselves. Until the rise of Silicon Valley. Where Plato's Academy used to be the ultimate place of learning, mentoring, and making, now it's Y Combinator. Stravinsky's concerts started riots, now Twitter helps quell them. Picasso's cubism changed how we saw the world, now that honor belongs to the likes of Google and MakerBot.
And yet artists are making phenomenal works of art using the very bits of technology that have in large part supplanted their role of kingmaker/culturemaker. So what happens when dancers use 3D imaging, opera companies make mobile apps, museums turn to GitHub, & robots become actors? This session will explore more than one hundred case studies of artists and arts organizations using (and in some cases, failing to use) technology to comment on society, to make your neighborhood a better place to live, and to run their business.

Barracuda Bowl: Digital Health Startup Pitch
Following the success of 2013's Founder's Stories, the format of this session is evolving into more of a "shark tank" style pitch fest for health tech startups. The "Barracuda Bowl" puts the spotlight on the founders of three health tech startups, who will each have five minutes to pitch their startup to an esteemed panel of "barracudas" – veteran investors, entrepreneurs, and judges.
After providing an overview of their business, the startup founders will be immersed into the Barracuda Bowl where the panel of judges will interrogate them and poke holes in their business plans. After all three founders have had their fifteen minutes in the bowl, they will assemble on stage, where the audience will have an opportunity to be the barracudas and unleash their questions on them. At the end of the session, the barracuda panel will decide which founder won the battle of the barracuda bowl and which ones got chewed to pieces.

Bioart: Melding Biotech and Art
No one denies that biotechnology is the prime technological hallmark of the coming age, but what it means and where it’s leading us remains largely unknown. Historically, artists have acted as interpreters of cultural shifts, and offered signposts to the future of cultural norms.
A growing number of artists are now turning to biotechnology as their medium. These bioartists have appropriated the tools biomedicine, genomics, ecology, and synthetic biology. By exploring with these tools, they are redefining identity, technology, and even the act of creating life. In this panel, curators and bioartists will attempt to decipher the themes emerging from this burgeoning genre of art, one that melds with biotech.

Gamifiying Peace: New Solutions in an Old Conflict
It’s commonly understood that gamification is an effective way of solving problems by incentivizing and reinforcing positive behavioral changes. As an Israeli Jew and an interaction designer, I wanted to test this theory by applying gamification principles to the most intractable, hardest to solve problem of all: the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. In my talk, I’ll present a location-based game built to put the Israelis and Palestinians in each others’ shoes, exploring the conflict through differing perspectives. For example, an Israeli teen playing the game would be exposed to the Palestinian experience through historical facts and figures, personal stories and testimonials, visualized data and simulated experiences, and vice versa. Inspired and concerned by events in my homeland, the vision behind the game is to create a system that can be used to create empathy and eventually reduce violence in conflicts everywhere.

Mastering Adaptive Marketing in a Real-Time World
Social media has changed the game for marketers. Most marketers are well versed in how to plan brand activity months or a year in advance—but the new digital landscape means that brands need to be on, and communicating, all the time.
Brands that have taken to the new environment quickly have adopted adaptive marketing. But many marketers and agency partners remain unclear about a brand’s role in evolving consumer conversations across the digital media landscape.
In this panel we’ll answer these marketers most common question: what is adaptive marketing and why do brands need it?
Leading adaptive marketing experts will discuss what they’ve learned from running adaptive marketing initiatives with big and small campaigns over the last 18 months and their successes. The panel will also outline what capabilities are required to make this form of marketing an integral part of the broader brand marketing efforts.
Presented by Visible Measures.

Protecting Great Ideas Without Stifling Innovation
The Internet is a sharing economy of information and ideas. In today’s digital age, how do we protect intellectual property without stifling innovation? Noncompete agreements are limited in California, Colorado and Oklahoma, but many tech companies around the U.S. rely on them as a method of protecting intellectual assets and business interests. In the fast-paced startup world, are these agreements still relevant? Many argue to move the tech industry forward, we must promote unbridled entrepreneurship - a notion that conflicts with boundaries in a noncompete, which prevent employees from spinning ideas into new companies. The conversation extends beyond tech; life sciences, engineering, and nonprofits struggle to toe the line of protection and innovation. This panel will bring together a diverse group of experts to discuss economic and business impacts of noncompetes and intellectual property laws, and how companies should look to protect great ideas in a world of rapid innovation.

Sex, Lies, and the Internet
"The Internet hates women," is the insight Adam Savage, co-host of Mythbusters, gave his teenage boys as they started to surf the web on their own. He explained that if they're not part of the solution, they might very well be part of the problem. It's true, some people online clearly do hate women, and their hostile and harassing behavior has turned some of the web into an unsafe workplace and an unequal public space.
While many of the panelists (Amanda Hess of Slate.com, Allyson Kapin of Women Who Tech and Rad Campaign, Rinku Sen of Race Forward: The Center for Racial Justice Innovation and Colorlines, and Emily May of Hollaback!) have examples of online harassment that are too numerous to recount, none of that makes them exceptional. It just makes them, and many others, women with an Internet connection. This panel will wrestle with how to fight online harassment and mob mentality, and why this issue matters to all of us.

As technologists, marketers and entrepreneurs we are challenged to drive business growth through a vast array of connected capabilities. Understanding what these capabilities are and how they work together requires knowledge across an overwhelming range of technologies and platforms. And this often seems like mastering a sea of shifting sands. To compound this challenge, our brains don’t have infinite capacity to retain all the knowledge we have gained over our lives.
But is this truly a phenomenon of the information age or has society worked through these issues before? Over 2000 years ago, the ancient Greeks and Romans developed a technique called a memory palace which provides a framework for people to organize and store information in their minds. Today, record-setting memory champions use these techniques to memorize over 65,000 digits of the number Pi. Can we use methods such as these today to help improve our ability to stay current with our rapidly-paced innovation culture?

As tech companies continue to release shocking statistics on the low numbers of women in tech, it’s important to examine the root of the problem: fewer girls studying computer science. Never the realm of the cool kids, CS still attracted enough boys to grow into a hipster coder culture. But despite Title IX and the rise of girl power, most girls are giving a big pee-eww to CS. It’s not a lack of innate analytical ability. Studies show that girls in the U.S. perform as well as boys on standardized math tests. But behavioral differences in the classroom can favor boys, who are more likely to call out answers even when they’re wrong, vs. girls, who tend to answer only when they’re sure they’re right. Intuit’s Anu Tewary took bold steps to stop this technical identity crisis before technical women go the way of the dodo. She’ll describe founding Technovation, a global programming & entrepreneurship program for girls and the ways the tech industry can help women thrive in the world of tech.

The Downside of Up: A Comic Novel
If you could push a button and make yourself rich, you’d do it. But what if the button would also make 11,000 families poorer? Would you still push it? That’s the question Dain Dunston asks in this timely page-turner of a comic novel. The Downside of Up deals with some of the toughest questions facing Americans today and proves you can do well in business by doing good.
Here’s the issue: wouldn’t it be nice to be a failed CEO? That’s where the real money is. In Dain’s book, the hero jokes that he can fail for only $25 million. To his surprise, someone takes him up on it. All he has to do is go down with the ship and he gets his dough. But when he tracks down wrongdoing in the stock trades around the private equity fund that wants to take the company over, he realizes no one will believe he wasn’t involved. In fact, the press is already saying he’s the evil mastermind. So he has to save the company, the employees and his own neck, if he can.
A comic reading and a lively discussion.

Everything You Ever Wanted
In her younger years, Jillian Lauren was a college dropout, a drug addict, and an international concubine in the Prince of Brunei’s harem, an experience she immortalized in in her bestselling memoir, Some Girls. In her thirties, Jillian's most radical act was learning the steadying power of love when she and her rock star husband adopt an Ethiopian child with special needs. After Jillian loses a close friend to drugs, she herself is saved by her fierce, bold love for her son as she fights to make him—and herself—feel safe and at home in the world.
Exploring complex ideas of identity and reinvention, Everything You Ever Wanted is a must-read for everyone, especially every mother, who has ever hoped for a second act in life.

Improvisational comedy is the single best preparation for your 9 to 5 job. Period. Without any doubt, learning the basics of improv comedy has made me a better worker, friend, son, daughter, and lover. And it'll do the same for you.
I wasn't the class clown, am not trying to make it to SNL, and don’t perform on stage anymore. I'm actually on the business side of advertising, not the creative end. But that’s the point.
Today, formal education and training teaches you the "what." It's about knowing the content and right answers. But the basics of improv comedy teach you the "how."
Let's face it. For many of us today, work is trial by fire, and any instruction manual is long gone. By repurposing conflicts and negativity as opportunities, we create constant unexpected successes. Anyone applying the basics of improv comedy to their job completely changes how they deal with people and problem solving on a daily basis.
And it will restore hair growth and make you taller.

Paid Editing of Wikipedia: Getting Past 'Gotcha'
Paid Editing of Wikipedia: Getting Past "Gotcha" discusses the complex and divisive issue of public relations and advocacy on the world's top reference site. Wikipedia has long dealt with editors with conflicts of interest. But in recent years, the frosty relationship between PR professionals and Wikipedia editors begun to thaw and seek a way forward.
This panel of communications professionals, academics and Wikipedia editors with experience in public relations, marketing, and online culture will debate what paid editing in Wikipedia means by providing a spectrum of views on contributors' neutrality, transparency, and motivations.
We will discuss Wikipedia's history of anonymous paid editing, the recent discovery of a vast network of "fake" accounts, and a landmark statement in 2014 by top global PR firms committing themselves to ethical Wikipedia engagement, marking a significant new chapter in Wikipedia's evolution.

The Personal Side of Robots
The ability of autonomous robots to interact and work effectively with people is increasingly important: from improving worker productivity with robot teammates, to enhancing people’s quality of life with personal robots. Social robots interact with people in an interpersonal way to support the socio-affective dimension of human experience. This, in turn, impacts human behavior, attitudes and performance in intriguing ways. Such findings encourage us to think quite differently about robots, beyond performing physical tasks, to empowering us on a deeper human level: to learn better, to stay healthier, to care for and connect with one another with greater engagement, and more. The benefits of social robots could be transformative in areas of significant societal need that demand critical innovation. Nonetheless, this also motivates a thoughtful dialog about the desired role of intelligent, emotive technology in our lives, our relationship with it, and possible consequences.

The Real Risks of 'Keepin' It Real'
“Is this profile I am looking at real or fake?” “How much credit can I put into this review?” "Will the things that I do today come back to haunt me in the future?"
Building trust is necessary and tireless work. Now more than ever, the peer economy, social media, and recommendation engines are tasked with defining what's acceptable and what data is shared. Online and real world identities are colliding. As the diversity of services and users proliferate, current approaches to trust systems are becoming more consequential.
This panel explores the tension between trust, confidentiality and social identity. The audience will walk away with perspectives from digital activism and cultural expression when translating trust into technical systems. We'll share findings on global opinions towards tech and privacy and its critical role to business. Join us for a critique of current strategies and their longer-term impact on the communities, societies, and networks we seek to protect and grow.

Whittle the Idea: A Creative Meet Up
Talented whittlers will tell you that they are able to see a design "hidden" in a block of wood; that all they're doing is revealing the true form locked within. Each time you set out to find the "big idea," how do you start? With a big blank page (or dry-erase board). This is your block of wood. Each time a word is written on that page, it's like a strike to your block that reveals more and more of the creative insight you seek. You whittle until you refine that bad boy into an efficient and powerful message. No matter what facet of media you work in, come meet up with like-minded creative professionals who delight in the process of revealing big ideas with creative whittling.

Today a combination of entrepreneurial states fostering innovation, creativity born out of difficulty and new available technologies are generating unusual social initiatives.

This examples will hopefully shed light on how Latin American culture can influence and inspire the rest of the world to shape and protect the two places where we live our lives today: our cities and our Internet.

Cultural Placemaking Through Interactive Storytelling
In this fun and interactive workshop, heritage and preservation will be juxtaposed with interactive storytelling. Every community has its stories, its history and its legacy that we want to pass on. Austin's African American Cultural Heritage District invites you to share your ideas of giving the district a dynamic on-line presence. This map is of and is grounded in the African American Cultural Heritage District, comprising much of east Austin. This is an area of Austin rich in history and culture, but whose stories are often overlooked or not known in the rapidly growing Austin and gentrification of the neighborhood.
We will demonstrate our new interactive Discover Heritage Map which we collaboratively produce interactive multi-media with local middle school students. Hear what we've done so far and share your ideas for future development in a fun and interactive workshop.

Disrupting Bureaucracy with Social Curation
A legislatively funded outreach initiative turned into an unprecedented story collection project for Austin's Bullock Texas State History Museum. As a cultural institution, we learned to navigate bureaucracy and automate social curation – and we mean REAL curation – with a responsive, accessible, and compliant framework that is yielding unexpected results. Community building activities, interactive programming, and pop-up exhibits are, well, popping up throughout Texas. And a whole host of people are excited about writing, curating, and interpreting their own histories. This project is a game-changer for state government – and the museum community – and has disrupted the way stakeholders think about outreach. The tech community will learn about what curation really means from professional museum curators, and how to pivot curatorial practices amid a malaise of high-profile clients.

Stories have power. Through stories we find meaning, the relationship of causes and effects, an alignment of thought process with time and movement. Marketers tell stories through branding, educators tell stories through curriculum, politicians tell stories through campaigns, and entertainers tell stories through books, movies and games. Just as software has revolutionized all of these, it's also morphing to sculpt a greater narrative, and in doing so, it's becoming more compelling.
Digital culture mavens Jon Lebkowsky and Jeff Kramer will describe and discuss how machines impact narrative, in effect "telling stories." From games examples, such as the procedurally generated Dwarf Fortress, to political twitter puppet armies, and the stories our data trails tell those who watch us, we'll show how software's getting smarter, and how this impacts new ways of finding meaning. We'll also how it's relevant to you, what to do about it, and how to be savvy about your own digital narrative.

It’s time to move out of your parents’ basement. But seriously, how much house can you actually afford – and is renting really “throwing your money away?”
Trulia’s Housing Economist Ralph McLaughlin will demystify the economics of house hunting. Even if you're not looking for a new place right now, this talk will reveal truths about cities, neighborhoods, and real estate that are second-nature to economists, but sound foreign to everyone else. You'll walk away with a better understanding of why prices and rents are soaring (psst…you can't just blame the tech industry), and realize that:
You can't have it all. There are tradeoffs. No one city, neighborhood, or home has everything you want.
You'll need to answer some tough questions honestly: Are you a saver? Can you stand commuting? How safe is your job?
You must do some math. No way around it – sooner or later, you'll need to figure out what you can afford and whether renting or buying makes more sense.

Use Computer Vision to Find Nudity, Guns or Bieber
Video has remained a passive medium since its inception & it remains the last asset to become fully digital. What does this mean? A computer, tablet, smart phone or television knows how to display video pixels but has no understanding of what those pixels represent. It has no idea that those pixels make up a moving image of your friend, a celebrity or a product you’d like to buy. But with the ever-changing digital ecosystem, this medium is quickly becoming a pivotal opportunity for brands, content creators and advertisers to understand what’s going on inside the video much like they do with everything else. WIREWAX is leading the pack with a powerful computer vision platform that can automatically extract intelligent metadata from videos for image or facial recognition & to identify everything from nudity, your best friend or a bottle of Dos Equis. A byproduct of this is the ability to create interactive trailers or shoppable videos, linking anything in the video to everything online.

All Signs Point to Yes: Predictive Is Here
Wouldn’t your company love to own a crystal ball that could actually glimpse the future and help every employee make the best possible decisions throughout the day? Enter predictive analytics.
Instead of relying on human intuition, companies can use predictive analytics to enlighten even the seemingly small daily choices that impact each of their operational "funnels" - for sales, recruiting and customers. Today’s predictive technologies let you use data science to factor in thousands of signals about any problem - whether it be increasing revenues, sourcing better candidates, or improving customer satisfaction. With a crystal ball like that, you can look beyond historical data and bring in external data points to make smart decisions and blow past your competition by operating at peak efficiency.
In this session, Gild, Gainsight and Infer will take you behind the curtain to explore how next generation apps are using predictive techniques to revolutionize the way companies operate.

There have long been strong opinions on either side of the artificial intelligence debate; some people rave about its advantages while others can’t get past visions of machines systematically taking over a la 'I, Robot.' In this panel, we’ll bring together experts on AI, robotics and machine learning to discuss how the answer lies somewhere in the middle. Yes, there are the concerning aspects to AI - a less personal society and privacy issues - but also inarguable upsides, like anticipatory technology that enhances rather than detracts from the less digital parts of life. Join us for a debate on common myths, misconceptions and concerns related to AI, and what a future of human-like computers really means for our society.

Changing Face of Fame: Social Media Celebrities
A 6 second video from a Justin Bieber look-alike is probably not the first tactic in your marketing plan, but maybe it should be. Celebrities have long played an important role in creating brand awareness and buzz around social causes because of their mass market of consumer followers. With a growing millennials consumer base and an increasing desire to reach audiences beyond TV screens and magazine pages, brands and advertisers are shifting gears from mainstream celebrities to the “new” celebrity on social media.
YouTube star Jenna Marbles has more subscribers than Katy Perry or Taylor Swift. Instagram and Vine stars sold out stadiums across the country on the DigiTour. Simply put, social media is transforming celebrity.
Connecting the “new” celebrities to a social cause gives organizations or brands more access to new audiences on emerging platforms, resulting in social sharing and real action. So how do we implement this successfully?

SXE: Creativity and Success from the Majority World
With the collapse of the dominant publishing, photographic and music empires, the Modern Creative is left wondering which way to turn, and whether anything can be salvaged from the rubble.
In this context of chaos, lessons can be drawn from the rise and fall of Asian and African empires, and from the innovations that are gaining significant traction in today’s Developing World.
The Chinese, for example, are responsible for what are arguably the four greatest inventions of all time: gunpowder, the compass, paper-making and printing. But why could they not turn these into economic successes, and how can modern creators avoid those mistakes? In Africa, the photocopier trumps ebooks, but authors and photographers are not robbed of their royalties. How?
Drawing on ancient histories and modern success stories from the Global South and Emergent East, Dominique le Roux inspires creatives to re-examine their assumptions, rethink their beliefs and reimagine their business models.

The Millennials: Empowering a Modern Workforce
The workforce is changing, that much is clear, and many people are worried about it. Pick up any newspaper or magazine and you can probably find a great article bemoaning the current crop of young professionals and pining for the work ethic of yesteryear. But whether you’re concerned about the rise of millennials or not doesn't matter: the millennial workforce is here and it’s here to stay. And that’s a good thing. It’s time to stop complaining about them and start empowering them as they climb into the driver’s seat of the global economy.
This panel will provide insight and analysis into the true nature of our changing, modern workforce and examine successful strategies for training, motivating and managing millennial workers. Attendees will hear from businesses and executives who specialize in getting the most out of employees and who have been successfully managing millennial employees and growing their businesses for years.

UI? UX? Visual Designer? Ever had trouble trying to figure out how to label what you do? The creative industry has expanded and changed with the rise of digital technology, and it’s brought on a slew of inconsistent, blended job titles in an attempt to describe what it is we do.
Can we decide on a set of universal standards or do we ditch the business-card-filling titles entirely to convey our professions?
It’s time we sat down and figured out how to explain to our moms—and our peers—what we do. Join us for a guided conversation with creatives of all types to share ideas, opinions, and dreams for our industry.
Here we will:
1. Generate groups of current job titles
2. Organize and consolidate
3. Define universal standards
4. Explain to our moms what we actually do.

Identity In the Future Of Embeddables and Wearables
Stemming from the rapid prototyping maker movement, technology has taken a huge leap forward to begin true integrations with the human body. As the human body becomes a natural extension of technology itself, ways of identifying a person to the technology around them is shifting from antiquated external body definitions, to internal body functions. From using heartbeat and vein recognition to uniquely identify a person, to embeddable and injectable body modification to enhance natural body identification, the future of how we interact with technology is vastly changing. We'll explore this movement and see where the future of identity in the human body is going.

This Is Your Brain On Visual Data
As humans, our ability to collect data is expanding exponentially, but it doesn't afford us exponential capacity unless we can understand that data. The human brain is near-miraculously wired to understand data visually – but not as rows and columns of digits. In this session discover the secrets of how and why humans have such an incredible grasp of visual data, see what happens when the brain processes data visually and learn how visualizing data is empowering humans around the planet to make sense of their data and change the world.
We'll cover tips, tricks and best practices for turning your own data into visualizations that make it easy to spot trends and outliers and exponentially increase understanding--whether it's your own personal quantified self data, the data from your start-up, or terabytes of enterprise data. Any questions?

The Blockchain: Creating a New Distributed World
Enter the Blockchain - the revolutionary technology behind Bitcoin. Software is eating the world and decentralization, cryptography and smart contracts are the technologies driving a wave of decentralization that will hit finance, government, insurance, and law to name but a few.
Bitcoin is the first Distributed Autonomous Cooperation (DAC) where shares are issued and contracts fulfilled without any central governance. It works without trust. The bylaws (the code) are open, transparent, and they govern the cooperation without anyone interfering. Indeed no one has the power to interfere. It is a paradigm shift from "Don't Be Evil" to "Can't Be Evil.”
With DACs there is less need for lawyers and regulators. For the regulation and conflict resolution is inherent in the system and without a centre or counter-party there is no one to sue or jail. DACs live inside the internet, have no downtime, are fast and extends the opportunities inherent in digital economies to the entire globe.

How to Not Hire and Retain Employees of Color
It’s time for some real talk in ethnic diversity. Members of this panel will discuss awkward moments and racial microaggressions. 2014 saw the release of diversity numbers from tech companies big and small and the shared theme was that there’s a lot of work to be done to equalize the workforce. At the time the numbers were released, Google, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and Yahoo are all under 5% Latino and under 2% Black.
In this discussion, Engineers and VCs from several prominent tech companies will discuss the unsuccessful approaches that have been taken and common pitfalls. They will delve into what’s being done to create more inclusive and diverse companies through reaching people earlier in the pipeline and investing in retention. Let’s push for companies that look like our nation. #moreofus

Nonprofit Crowdfunding Bill of Rights
Last year, David J. Neff, Digital Engagement Strategist, PwC, and Miram Kagan, Senior Fundraising Principal, Kimbia, “crowdsourced” the crowdfunding donors’ bill of rights – what donors can and should expect from crowdfunding campaigns. This year, we’re turning the table and are working together with the nonprofit community to come up with their bill of rights and responsibilities. Specifically, whether you are a platform provider or a nonprofit, to what rights are you entitled and to what responsibilities should you adhere when hosting a crowdfunding campaign? We’ll work with session attendees to discuss/create ideas in an open forum, and follow up with social commenting and a final consolidated post. Not just theory, as we did in 2014 for the donors’ bill of rights there will be a firm and practical deliverable.
For the output of last year’s work, please visit: http://www.thenonprofittimes.com/news-articles/crowdsourcing-donors-confusing-fundraising-funding/

Quantifying Well-Being: Big Brother, Big Mother
Well-being isn’t only about health or even the absence of sickness. Today, it’s about purpose, social support, community, financial security and physical health. But is it possible to quantify your own personal well-being? And if so, what does the data mean and what should you do with it? This session brings one of the world’s most well-known leaders in personal data to explore the convergence of forces that combine high tech personal health tracking devices with fundamental lifestyle changes to empower people to achieve their optimal well-being. Chris Dancy, named the “The Most Connected Man on Earth” by Mashable, Fox News and the BBC. Dare to be absurd.
What do slow motion eels, Instagram posers and gay Russians have in common? They’ve all been the subject of successful side projects built by Per and Oskar. This core conversation will talk about how to take side projects from first rough ideas to working websites, and the joy and panic involved in each step of the way.
Oskar and Per are two award winning digital creative directors from Sweden with experience from some of the world’s most prominent digital agencies (Farfar, R/GA, Perfect Fools, Great Works, Blast Radius etc). Outside of their main careers, they've had great success with their side-projects. These have ranged from the smallest online toys to larger web services, all breathing and living Internet culture. Now they’re taking the final step and making their living working on these side projects.

Stopping Outbreaks with Genomics
Bacteria and viruses are passed between people with every touch and breath that we take. Some of those transmissible microbes can cause devastating disease and the healthcare industry is making great strides to prevent those illnesses. By applying the amazing technologies developed to sequence the human genome to bacteria and viruses, scientists can detect each jump that they make between human hosts with incredible accuracy and precision, radically transforming public health for the better.
This session will teach a novice audience about genomics and how it can reinvigorate our fight against infectious disease.

Story Structure Secrets
When it comes to crafting a compelling story, it’s imperative to identify and emphasize the greatest themes present inside your existing raw materials. In this session, you will learn classic story-structure techniques that can be applied to films and videos of any length as well as concepts you can use to define and create a story arc. In this session you’ll learn about what to look for in your own footage to build upon universal themes while creating well-placed beats that follow the rules of good structure.
Learn how to hook the viewer with a compelling opening, structure questions that engage the audience, and identify when it’s time to move from one scene to another. Using examples, you will see how the rules of three-act structure can be applied to films of any length. From shorts to features or documentaries, your film will benefit by applying classic techniques to create strong story structure.

The Future of Food? A Personal Growing Revolution
While interest in food consumption has persisted through millennia, food production has been banished in thought and practice from our convenience-driven, urban lifestyles. Today, a renewed emphasis on food production is catalysing the creation of products that will empower people to grow their own healthy, sustainable food.
In this panel we’ll explore personal food production through:
-Food culture. Will personal connection be lost to increasingly automated technologies? If so, is that ok?
-Economics. How do we quantify and compare the differences in value between home grown vs grocery store produce?
-Growing techniques. Everything from soil-based growing, to sterile hydroponics, to ecoponics.
-Lighting techniques, from LEDs to natural light. Is indoor growing with artificial lights really more sustainable than shipping fresh food thousands of miles?
In this panel, we’ll explore the realities of personal food production with some of the leaders of this growing field. Join us!

Wallet on Your Wrist or Just Happy to See Me?
Wearable technology has skyrocketed, becoming the buzzword of 2014. A Nielsen report suggests that about 36 million American adults currently own and use some form of wearable technology. But what’s next? The wearable wallet. You may think the idea of a wearable wallet is “out there,” but Juniper Research says the retail revenue from smart wearable devices, including smartwatches and glasses, will reach $19 billion by 2018. Wearable payments aren’t a replacement for mobile, but an extension. They further connect our digital and physical worlds—bridging the gap between online and offline shopping experiences. Join this session with PayPal and ReadWrite as they share recent studies, and discuss this new trend and what’s to come.

We Are Not Robots: A CSR Meet Up
According to the Gini Coefficient, a measurement of income inequality, the wealth disparity in San Francisco is greater than that in Rwanda. With its tech industry contributing to the fastest growing income gap in the nation, San Francisco is a flash point of the division between rich and poor. The tech backlash, the pointing fingers solely at tech for social ailes, has become a rallying point for many people.
In response to the anger and frustration on both sides regarding this inequity, corporate social responsibility can be seen as a necessity. Yet, in a for-profit company whose primary goal is the bottom line, developing a strong Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) plan can be a challenge. This session will focus on the balancing act that is CSR. This Meet Up will explore the relationship of CSR within a company as well as specific issues regarding the tech backlash and the need for CSR in tech companies.

Fail Fast, Save the World: Prototyping for Good
In humanitarian response, the stakes are literally life and death, and the fear of failure is palpable. While the aid community’s dedication to social good is admirable, risk aversion in conflict and disaster response has led to an endless cycle of elaborate, unfocused, long-term interventions that are meandering, ineffective and often collapse under their own weight.
Over the past decade the startup community has shown us a new way to innovate. Technology entrepreneurs use design thinking and rapid prototyping to create novel products and platforms with limited resources. It’s time for this lean, efficient, “fail fast” approach to disrupt humanitarian programming just like it’s revolutionized software development.
In this session we’ll look at a new paradigm for crisis response, using human-centered design, lean startup ideas, and agile project planning to fail —- for good.

Government Surveillance: How You Can Change It
Governments have a duty to protect their citizens, but recent disclosures about Americas surveillance practice's worldwide highlighted a need for reform. The balance in too many countries has tipped too far in favor of the state and away from the rights of the individual - rights that are enshrined in our Constitution. We have seen a lot of change in attitude, but is it enough to restore trust among users and confidence of citizens around the world? The panel will discuss the need for the technology community to push reform. While efforts are underway, the PATRIOT Act must be reauthorized by May 2015. Learn what we must reform to protect the Internet and privacy rights.

Is the Internet Disappointed In Us?
The Web arrived in glory and hope. It was going to be a new beginning that let us at last get right our relationships to business, to governments, to media, to one another. Now even many of the early Internet enthusiasts think the Web has recentralized, new authorities replacing the old, and if anything has changed, it's for the worse. But is that true? Are we taking the positive changes for granted? Most important, what are the real opportunities the Internet opens for us? What can we do -- as individuals and in connection -- to take advantage of the gift the Internet has given us?

Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics
The Office for National Statistics is the UK’s largest independent producer of official statistics and is the recognised national statistical institute for the UK. It is responsible for collecting and publishing statistics related to the economy, population and society at national, regional and local levels. It has a website that serves around a million users a month and publishes many of the key statistics that influence the UK economy and politics.
That website has been called “..a national embarrassment.”, “..virtually unnavigable” and "the worst, most important, website in the UK."
We will talk about the challenges we faced, the standards we have embraced and what we learned from other official statistics organisations around the world and especially from the open [government] data community.

The Art and Science of Data-Driven Storytelling
Data is setting a new world order for everyone from designers, to developers, to brands, to advertisers and publishers - but converting data in its many forms into an engaging story isn’t always as easy as it may seem. In a core conversation with Liz Lukas, CEO North America of Decoded - the global company giving professionals a high-level understanding of data, code and more - and James Ball, Special Projects Editor for the Guardian Media Group, explore how the Guardian is harnessing data and data scientists to turn out groundbreaking news stories, including decoding NSA documents and more. The chat will explore the Guardian's creative process, their team, their use of open source (and highly classified) data, and how these techniques can be translated to shape your next big story.

The Camera Reimagined: New Forms, New Tools
What we think of as the visual image and visual storytelling is rapidly evolving driven by advances in camera technology and an explosion of smartphone apps. From SnapChat and Vine and the hyper ephemeral, to visual social networks like Instagram and EyeEm, to visual storytelling apps like Exposure.co and Storehouse, to PhotoPedia with its intent to archive and create a more permanent visual record, not a week passes without the emergence of a new experiment in visual expression and storytelling. Yet while what it means to be a photo and a video is evolving at a rapid clip, the camera is still stuck back in the relative stone ages. Hans Peter will discuss the future of the camera and whether the future will be all smartphones, or if and why the internet of things could perhaps create a renaissance for “the camera"?
