Sampling has long been demonized by many within the music industry. Critics of sampling feel that it lacks creativity and musicianship and is even on par with “stealing” another musician’s work. On the other side of the argument are multi-platinum artists that swear by the use of sampling as a way to create and innovate musical fusions that aide discovery and awareness of legacy catalogues to new audiences. In this session, we will discuss how sampling saved the music industry by growing the music revenues for everyone, revitalizing the neighborhood vinyl shop, and giving rise to the highly-profitable dance festivals.
