The Snowden files revealed the extent of surveillance programmers undertaken by the NSA and GCHQ in a digital world where we increasingly spend more and more of our lives online.
The extent to which private companies are cooperating with the government agencies has been a major concern for internet users across the world and legislators have struggled to keep pace with the changing nature of digital to maintain balance between the individual right to privacy and the need for national security.
This session hosted by theguardian.com will explore the extent to which that balance has tipped in favor of governments in the US and EU.
