The U.S. Department of Transportation announced that it will require vehicle-to-vehicle communications technology to be installed in future new cars. This technology enables vehicles to "talk" to each other using wireless technology.
Connected vehicles can help drivers avoid crashes, save fuel, and avoid traffic jams, among other benefits. The USDOT is looking for the coolest and most innovative ideas to help move this technology forward. The USDOT recently announced plans for several Connected Vehicle Pilots where cities can partner with applications developers to demonstrate how new applications can operate in a real-world environment. The program aims to spur innovation among early adopters of connected vehicle application concepts, using best available and emerging technologies.
The USDOT also works with several connected vehicle test beds that are available for anyone to use in testing applications and inventions in an environment using the latest wireless technology.
