Unspecialize: The More You Know the Less You See

When you're not familiar with a place, you look around and spot new and interesting things. But the better you know a place, the less tempted you are to look around. Designer Daniel Disselkoen noticed it’s not only knowing a place very well, which makes you perceive less. Knowledge in general makes you see your environment in a certain way.
In his words: "The more I learned about design, the more I perceived the world in terms of design. Of course, I am exaggerating when I say that I only see typefaces, patterns, grids, packaging and posters. But I might just see the box and not its content.
To further generalize and exaggerate: a biologist might spot plants, an architect might focus on buildings and a psychologist might perceive more about people. "
How you perceive the world is influenced by what you’re specialized in.
In his talk, Daniel offers the audience a straightforward and surprisingly practical way to look at the world in a whole different way.

I graduated at the Royal Academy of Art in the Netherlands. During my studies, I wanted to broaden my knowledge beyond the field of design and studied at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. There I developed an interest in filmmaking and photography.
