Weaving together our physical and digital worlds through the Internet of Things (IoT) has tremendous potential to help organizations create value, but also increases our vulnerability. To explore this tension head-on, our panel discusses what the IoT means for public safety – the good, the bad, and the ugly. The IoT can change the way public safety organizations execute their missions – helping them more effectively protect, respond, and enforce. However, as these devices become more integrated into our daily lives, they create vulnerabilities that pose public safety risks. While hacking a single home is invasive, malware that infects thousands of utility meters is an emergency. Government plays an important role in balancing these new realities, taking advantage of new capabilities to enhance public safety while also building an ecosystem to manage the complex threats created by the IoT – both of which may require government organizations to embrace new ways of working.
