How to Craft Culturally Relevant Health Messages

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is best known to most audiences as the office that leads implementation of the Affordable Care Act. One of the impacts of ACA has been the elevation of the Office of Minority Health, which annually reaches millions of consumers, community-based organizations and laypeople through culturally and linguistically appropriate health messaging. This session would focus on how health professionals and journalists can create successful, viral and culturally relevant health messaging as the country becomes increasingly racially and ethnically diverse. For the first time this fall, for instance, U.S. public schools will enroll a minority-majority student body -- in the next twenty years, the majority of the workforce is expected to be comprised of racial and ethnic minorities. We will discuss the how OMH has carved out a niche within government agencies and externally, influencing health policy and strengthening community engagement.
