The role of photography today is more important and ubiquitous than ever before. The smartphone and the internet have democratized photography and publishing. Any image has the potential to go viral and shed light or contribute to the noise of modern life. The transition from analog to digital has been hard for journalism and doubly hard on photojournalists. Entire photo staff layoffs, a shrinking client base, competition from crowd sourcing and cheap stock images have severely threatened the professional news photographer’s ability to eek out a living.
