Battles at Home: Protecting the Sharing Economy

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

The sharing economy has alternately been called a means to empower users and add efficiency to the economy as well as a death knell for powerful, incumbent industries. Now, almost anyone can rent out their bedroom or be an on-demand driver. As the peer-to-peer economy grows, these services raise issues ranging from taxes to public safety, and some incumbent industries have grown frustrated with this disruption in the marketplace, attempting to use city and state government to squash these burgeoning businesses.
Our panel will discuss the current policy battles across the U.S. from ridesharing battles in Illinois and Virginia, to the fights over home-sharing in New York and California as well as debate the merits of the arguments made by incumbent industries. Panelists will speak to the key battleground states, highlighting which states and cities have advanced a pro-innovation agenda versus those who have propped up the incumbent industries.
