The Big Data Revolution has begun, but the applications and implications of harvesting and harnessing this data are in their infancy—and this is particularly true in understanding how cities really ‘work’ and how to make them better. However, the potential impact of Big Data Analytics—using data collected from pervasive sensors and ubiquitous mobile devices—in improving the lives of everyone in cities is enormous: safety, quality and efficiency of services, and even enrichment and entertainment. There are challenges to overcome: collecting enough high-quality data; obtaining buy-in from citizens and protecting their privacy; developing urban models with sufficient accuracy; etc. This panel will review current leading city data efforts, present opportunities and possibilities for urban data analytics, and discuss issues and solutions in using Big Data to improve lives for all. Panelists will include leaders in urban planning, computing, mobile devices, and Big Data analytics.
