Beginner level coding, preferably some Java experience.
What to Bring:
Bring your laptop with github and Processing pre-installed.
In this session you will learn to program lighting patterns and effects for a large scale piece of artwork called Squared. Squared is a 50 foot tall steel structure containing over 800 cubes clustered in a fractal array. Each cube holds between 12-24 individually addressable LEDs, programmed through a custom software interface written in the Processing programming language. The code you create in this session will be added to our open source repository and made available to the community for future reuse. This is a working session where the people participating decide their level of involvement. We will serve more as a coaching team and answer technical questions and help to get people un-blocked while they are creating their personal expressions of art and design.
The first 45 minutes will be an introduction to the sculpture, open to questions about it's design and creation.
We will then take a 15 minute break.
After, we'll give a rundown of setting up the software and basic environment. We'll instruct how to create a basic pattern and animation. We'll then follow with an open workshop, where audience will be encouraged to brainstorm pattern ideas and implementation together. We'll be available to answer whatever artistic and technical questions they have. This will last approximately 90 minutes and we will display patterns as they are created onto our model tree.
The last 30 minutes will be dedicated to showing what was produced.
