Maracuyeah

Maracuyeah In an effort to support touring artists playing new, tropical music creations, djs Mafe and rAt founded Maracuyeah in 2011 – a project cultivating DC events that remix and criss-cross cultures, with a mixtape-style Pan-Latin-to-the-Future sound that shakes crowds, and mixes in traditional & popular tropical rhythms they grew up with.

Intertwined with their collective organizing work, rAt & Mafe are also DJs who have toured the US and Latin American, sharing their Maracuyeah sounds. They have shared the stage with artists such as Bomba Estereo, Ana Tijoux, Calle 13, Pernett, Lido Pimienta, Omar Souleyman and the Kumbia Queers among many others. Their sets feature everything from vintage chicha recordings, dancehall en español, weirdo latin pop, electro-cumbia remixes, tropical bass bangers and their own special sounds they call "Quinceañera Bass".

Together with many collaborators, Mafe & rAt have helped to build a transnational network of artists, platform creators, and visionaries working to shift now-outgrown structures within underground music economies. Maracuyeah has also grown into a family of creatives and organizers, including dj Carmencha, the newest member of the Maracuyeah DJ roster in Washington DC.

dj rAt will perform a special Maracuyeah set at the Sol Life Launch Official SXSW showcase, joined by VJ caliXta and Precolumbian- two amazing artists of the extended Maracuyeah family.

dj rAt In addition to her work with Maracuyeah, rAt also djs & organizes dance spaces in DC w/ Maracuyeah's sister crew Anthology of Booty. She also has been hugely influenced by her participation & leadership within: INCITE!, DJ Geekouts, Chispa!, the Allied Media Conference, Girls Rock DC, Radio CPR and dope transformative DJ crews across the U.S.. With the support of Maracuyeah, rAt co-leads queer-centered DJ workshops in her home w/ a badass group of women & gender non-conforming people of color. rAt loves the liberatory possibilities that mixed dance spaces + our own booties hold.

caliXta caliXta DJs & VJs as part of CumbiaSazo as well as dále shine. Originally from Chicago, caliXta co-founded dále shine to explore & spin a wide variety of digital music, integrate visuals into music, and work to create a scene for ‘cyber ritmos’ in various local scenes. Some of her early inspiration comes from attending Maracuyeah parties in DC and wanted to bring some of those sisterhood communal space-making vibes to Chicago. While in Chicago, caliXta has continued collaborating with Maracuyeah in various projects. Her philosophy is to create and bridge spaces through an audio-visual experience from around the world that people will love. dále shine is a party series dedicated to showcasing the music of latinx america, integrating that music into the Chicago soundscape, and providing a safe space for diversity of expression.
