Akka

Akka or Akkachar (born Chafik Chennouf, 25 March 1984) is a Dutch electronic record producer based in Amsterdam. One of Dutch’ first dubstep and experimental most prominent DJ’s and producers, he has played an important role in the genre’s development in The Netherlands. His debut release was on Dutch imprint Subway. He started dj-ing in 2005 and was well known in the Dutch underground-scene.

Chennouf was born in Emmen, The Netherlands. As a teenager he started collecting vinyls and in 2002 he qualified as an Audio Engineer. He also started producing around that time (using Reason) and claims to now have enough material for his debut album. In 2005 he started dj-ing in Amsterdam and Utrecht and quickly became a household name in the Dutch techno scene. At this time he also promoted his own events (Deflect and Dualism in City Hall and Club Poema) in Utrecht which was focusing on UK techno. He brought in names like Inigo Kennedy (first show in The Netherlands), Regis, Reeko and many others.

In 2008 he started promoting a night in Amsterdams’ main venue: Melkweg. The night was called Conflict and was all about different styles of electronic dance music. In this year he also started his own recordlabel; Rwina Records. This was a big success from the get go. Also this year he plays the first official Dutch dubstep-event. This got him a residency on Subway in Rotterdam. He also got a residency in Utrecht. He quickly became one of Dutch most important dubstep-dj’s. All this was going on while he booked international success with releasing vinyls.

In 2010 he released his debut release on Dutch label; Subway and in 2011 his debut single also on Subway that got airplay on BBC and Kiss FM. Both were released on vinyl and in digital formats. He also had his foreign radio debut on UK radiostation Rinse FM. In 2011 he signed to Dutch agency; Alles Los and from there on he played a lot of shows in The Netherlands and in Europe (UK, Germany, Belgium, Estonia, Malta, Finland, Norway, Serbia, Ukraine) In this year he also became a resident of Melkweg in Amsterdam where he played twice a month and made his debut on national radio with a mix. In 2013 he had a release with long time collaborator: Taz on his own Rwina imprint that gave him a lot of international attention and a 8/10 in Mixmag. He also played Exit Festival in Serbia that summer and played after Hudson Mohawke on Pitch Festival for 5000 people. Big international artists like DJ Shadow, Mary Anne Hobbs and The Gaslamp Killer played his tracks and now his tunes are in almost every set of the bigger jocks in this genre.

In 2014 there will be a big interview in DJBroadcast about his influence on the Dutch scene as an artist and as a labelowner. He will also played 5 Days Off in Amsterdam in March 2014. This will also be the year that he released his solo debut EP which contains three tracks that have been supported by people like: Mark Pritchard, Mary Anne Hobbs, LeFtO, DJ Shadow, The Gaslamp Killer, Kode9 and many others. It also got him an 8/10 in Mixmag and a good amount of press.
